Jan Armgardt

This internationally renowned designer lives in Schondorf on the Ammersee and works for well-known companies in the european furniture industry. After training as a cabinet maker during his interior design studies, he began marketing his own upholstered furniture. Subsequently, he started up his own furniture distribution which marketed his own designs and eventually set up on his own as a designer in 1974.

In 1985 he and a friend and colleague, Prof. Auwi Stubbe, founded the company Designer Collegium GmbH in Coburg, which specialised in spacial, furniture and industrial design.

Experiments using chipboard and paper followed, constituting his claim to make sustainable and ecological furniture which consequently led to many furniture- cycles in the last 25 years all of which are unique. Numerous national and international solo exhibitions as well as group exhibitions on every continent underline his status as an internationally recognised designer. He has received over 40 prizes and accolades for his designs.

From 1992 to 1996 Armgardt worked as an assistent lecturer at the technical college in Coburg. From 1997 to 1999 he lectured at the ‘Staatlichen Korbfachschule Lichtenfels’. In 1998 he acted as substitute professor and in 2001 was appointed honorary professor at the technical college in Aachen.
